Earthquake: 5.0 Magnitude Quake Rocks Masbate

Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake in Masbate, May 26, 2023

EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 5.0 magnitude quake in Uson, Masbate, Thursday, May 26, 2023.

Following the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that jolted a part of Davao Occidental a few weeks ago, another strong quake was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The quake hit a part of Masbate. According to the agency, it had a magnitude of 5.0.

The earthquake that struck Masbate Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 11:26 p.m. was tectonic in origin. It specifically hit Uson.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Masbate was located at 12.31°North, 123.79°East – 010 km North 01° West of Uson. It had a depth of focus of 014 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are expected from the said quake as well as aftershocks. According to the quake-recording bureau, the following instrumental intensities were felt in these areas:

  • Intensity II
    • Naval, Biliran
    • Leyte, Leyte
    • Villaba, Leyte
  • Intensity III
    • Masbate City, Masbate
