QC Councilor Fumes Over GMA Reporter “Insensitive” Report About Her Killed Uncle
Quezon City (QC) Councilor Doray Delarmente slams a reporter from GMA over an “insensitive” report about her killed uncle.
Councilor Doray Delarmente of Quezon City’s Majority Floor did not agree with a story by one of GMA’s correspondents, Jamie Santos. Delarmente chastised GMA News for what she described as an irresponsible and insensitive report on the May 17 fire that killed her uncle.
Delarmente claims she made “false reporting” regarding her late uncle, Retired PB General George ‘Jimmy’ Ancheta Sr. Delarmente stated that Ancheta’s wife was standing outside the house, a few steps away from Santos, when she reported his death.
“Jamie Santos, you reported na “lumabas yung senior citizen, at bumalik ulit ng bahay.” For the record, and based on all the witnesses na kasama sa bahay … HINDI SIYA NAKALABAS NG BAHAY. My uncle, Retired Police Brig General George Ancheta, died inside … and HE DIDN’T HAVE A CHANCE TO GET OUT OF HIS HOUSE. Your FALSE REPORTING has been causing so much pain in our family. SO. MUCH. PAIN,” she said.
“His wife, who just got out of the house, was standing a few feet from you … and HINDI PA NIYA ALAM NA WALA NA ANG ASAWA NIYA. Sinisigaw niya yung pangalan ng asawa niya sa harap ng bahay. (Hindi mo ba iyon nakita? Sigurado ako nakita mo, kasi lahat ng miron na andoon nakita yun,)” the councilor said.
Delarmente criticized her supposed “irresponsible journalism” because she revealed her uncle’s death “without even confirming if the family knew.” Ancheta’s children and sister, Delarmente’s mother, were also not notified and learned about it through the news.
” You reported that my uncle DIED on LIVE TV …. without even confirming if alam na ng pamilya! Is that RESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM? … Wala ba kayong “protocol” sa pagbabalita? Hindi ba dapat ALAMIN MO MUNA kung alam na ng kaanak ng namatay ang impormasyon, bago mo ito ibalita sa buong mundo??? Ms. Jamie Santos, wala ka bang pamilya???” she added.
She further said that Santos’ account was incorrect because it stated that her uncle exited the flaming house and returned inside. But, she claims, he never got the chance to leave the house and died inside.
Delarmente also complained that the reporter was insensitive. She stated that house assistant Andrew was discovered two hours after the fire because he was locked in the back of the property.
He left the house drenched, with burns on his body and smoke inhalation, and yet Santos subjected him to a live interview. Andrew was still traumatized and bewildered, according to the councilor, and Santos was unlikely to gain information from him.
“Nawalan na kami ng kapamilya … tapos nagdagdag pa kayo sa pasakit na nararamdaman namin. I am airing this out because I WANT YOU TO RECTIFY YOUR MISTAKE. At sana… huwag niyo na itong uulitin sa ibang mga pamilya,” she vented on her Facebook post.
