Binibining Pilipinas Cebu Candidate Joy Dacoron Apologizes For Sto. Niño Costume
BINIBINING PILIPINAS CEBU – Miss Cebu Province Joy Dacoron apologized for wearing Sto. Niño-inspired costume for the pageant.
One of the 40 official candidates for the Binibining Pilipinas 2023 is Joy Dacoron. On May 28, the grand coronation night will take place in Araneta City’s Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray will serve as the host for the third consecutive year, while the current Miss International Jasmin Selberg is anticipated to make an appearance. Kapamilya star Vice Ganda will also perform at the event.
Cebu’s bet Joy Dacoron found herself in hot water recently when her Sto. Niño national costume went viral online and caused outrage from many religious people as well as scorn from some internet users. On May 17, the beauty queen spoke with Inquirer about it as they were having dress rehearsals at the New Frontier Theater in Araneta City in Quezon City
“It was not my intention to desecrate our Señor Santo Niño. I deeply love our señor. If you only knew the stories I could tell because of my faith in him that is so deep, I will tell them all,” she said.
“I wish you would understand how deep my faith is, and that I am proud to show it to everybody… Let’s all spread love, and have that faith in our heart that our connection with one another will remain, because only faith can unite us,” she continued.

According to the report, the Sto. Niño costume was designed by Bacolod-based designer Chino Ledesma Christopherson. He used the garments of the religious image’s vestments to give the impression that Dacoron was the Child Jesus. It was revealed on May 16 at pageant’s national costume photo exhibit held at the Gateway Mall in Araneta City, and it was shared on the pageant’s social media accounts. As of May 17, it has been removed from online platforms.
Dacoron said that both of them have personal testimonies of faith, with Christopherson dressing up the figure of the Child Jesus as part of an annual custom and Dacoron turning to the Santo Niño during a difficult time in her life the previous year. She added that they were influenced by the clothes worn in prior pageants that displayed religious symbols on stage.
“Those costumes did not earn as much negative comments from people as mine had. There were a few, but it did not have much of a negative impact on our nation,” she explained.
Joy Dacoron said that she realized that it was improper for her to use it on the stage of the national contest.
“It’s also a lesson for everybody. We have different ways of expressing our faith, so let’s do it properly that we do not trample on others,” she said.
“We can share our testimony, how it helped us. But then again, we need to consider how we can make people better understand what we’re trying to get across, capture their hearts and show them we have the same souls,” she continued.
The professional volleyball player reiterated her apology to everybody who may have been upset by her religious expression on the national pageant stage and thanked the Cebu church leaders for their understanding.
“I am really sorry, I take full accountability for the mistake that I have committed. Thank you to everyone,” she said.
