Earthquake Today: 4.4 Magnitude Quake Rocks Southern Leyte

Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake Today in Southern Leyte, May 17, 2023

EARTHQUAKE TODAY – The Phivolcs recorded a 4.4 magnitude quake in Southern Leyte, today, Wednesday, May 17, 2023.

Following the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that jolted a part of Davao Occidental a few weeks ago, another strong quake was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The quake hit a part of Southern Leyte. According to the agency, it had a magnitude of 4.4.

The earthquake that struck Southern Leyte, today, Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at 05:59 a.m. was tectonic in origin. It specifically hit Hinundayan.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Southern Leyte was located at 10.31°North, 125.23°East – 005 km South 36° West of Hinundayan. It had a depth of focus of 008 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages aftershocks are not expected from the said quake but it may have caused damages. According to the quake-recording bureau, the following intensities and instrumental intensities were recorded in these areas:

  • Intensity III
    • Silago, Southern Leyte
  • Intensity IV
    • Southern Leyte
      • San Juan
      • Hinundayan
      • Hinunangan
      • Anahawan

Instrumental Intensities:

  • Intensity II
    • Malitbog, Southern Leyte
  • Intensity IV
    • San Juan, Southern Leyte
  • Intensity V
    • Hinunangan, Southern Leyte
