Timor-Leste Releases Decision on Cong. Arnie Teves’ Request for Asylum

Negros Oriental Rep. Arnie Teves Requests Timor-Leste for Asylum

Timor-Leste released its decision on the request of Negros Oriental 3rd District Representative Arnie Teves for asylum.

Until now, Congressman Arnie Teves has yet to return to the Philippines even amids the issues that his name is involved in. He is accused as one of the masterminds behind the killing of the late Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo.

Teves denied the accusations. He also refused to go home to the Philippines citing his concern over his safety. The Philippine authorities extended offers to ensure his safety but the Congressman did not heed the calls of the authorities including his own family to go home and face the accusations.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Cong. Arnie Teves filed a request for asylum in Timor-Leste. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Negros Oriental Representative is in Dili, its capital, where he filed for a request for political asylum.

Timor-Leste has decided on the application of Cong. Arnie Teves for political asylum. Based on the report, the country denied his request and gives him five (5) days to leave the nation. Justice Secretary Boying Remulla explained that asylum is granted when there is persecution but it is not happening in the case of Teves.

“Asylum is a term used to seek protection from a state from persecution. But this is not the case because there is no persecution involved here. What’s happening here is that there’s prosecution happening not persecution,” Remulla said.

The DOJ is moving for the cancellation of the passports of Teves. More updates may be posted soon.
