KAREN BALAAN – The young Ilonggo bet in 400-meter heats for elementary girls category runs barefoot during the contest.

Athletes have been known to push the limits of the human body and spirit in pursuit of excellence, and one example of this can be seen in the sprint contests where some athletes opt to run barefoot.

Recently, in the ongoing Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet 2023 held at Aklan Sports Complex in Makato, Aklan, Karen Balaan from Tarong Elementary School in Carles, Iloilo, ran in the 400-meter heats elementary girls category without wearing any shoes.

Balaan, who is determined to win, ran on the track barefooted, which drew attention and admiration from the crowd and the netizens.

To prevent Balaan from getting injured, the coaches attached adhesive medical tape to her feet instead of shoes. Although the coach brought running shoes for her, Balaan chose not to wear them, and the tape worked well for her.

Balaan’s father inspired her to pursue sports, and her victory in the WVRAA 2023 made him proud. She also proved that having expensive sports equipment does not define a good athlete.
