Pimentel Appealed to DepEd to Buy Additional Electric Fans in Public Schools
Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to use funds in buying electric fans in public schools.
In light of the country’s present heat, the Senate Minority urged to the DepEd that they spend their P150 million in confidential money to reportedly purchase electric fans for public schools. Pimentel stated in an interview that the distribution of electric fans in public schools is intended to protect pupils from the excessive heat of the weather.
Pimentel is claimed to have chosen the electric fan since air conditioners are pricey. It should be noted that the DepEd first rejected the idea to install air conditioners in public schools across the country owing to “budget constraints.”
According to Pimentel, DepEd officials may diminish DepEd’s confidential money. The 2023 budget contained P150 million in money to reportedly resolve the Covid-19 pandemic, based on the report.
Meanwhile, Pimentel stated that when the PAGASA declares the sun’s heat to be dangerous, pupils should not attend a school or be sent home early, and they should wear make-up in class. If the weather is hot and there is no electricity, schools may postpone face-to-face lessons and convert to modular distance learning, according to the DepEd.
According to DepEd Spokesperson Michael Poa, this is in compliance with the memorandum order issued to principals of public and private schools. According to the memo, schools have the authority and responsibility to postpone in-person lessons and switch to alternative delivery modes (ADM) amid ‘unfavorable weather and environment’ that may disrupt classroom learning and jeopardize students’ health and welfare.
