Employee Dies After Inhaling Toxic Gas During Work in Davao City

Last Friday morning (April 21, 2023) around 10:30 am, an employee of a contractor for the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project tragically passed away, while three others were hospitalized, after inhaling a toxic gas during a pipe installation in Barangay Buhangin Proper.

On Sunday (April 23), Buhangin Police Station reported that the victim was identified as Jaime Diaz Gabutero, a 42-year-old employee of WITCO Construction & Development Corporation. He is a resident of Biao Joaquin in the Tugbok District.

The three individuals who were rushed to the hospital were Jovan Manayon Tungal, 34 years old and a resident of Acacia in Lower Tamugan; Joshua Guadalupe Villanueva, 33 years old and a resident of Tawan-Tawan in Baguio District; and Ryan Marayan Calo, 42 years old and a resident of Tagakpan in Tugbok District.

Apo Agua Infrastructura Inc. (Apo Agua) reported on Saturday that the contractor WITCO notified them that four of their personnel were “conducting internal cleaning inside a pipeline” when they experienced breathing difficulty.

According to the Buhangin Police Station report, the victims had trouble installing the pipeline due to water accumulation inside it. As a result, they opted to siphon off the water with a submersible pump.

However, during the process, the workers inhaled a strange chemical and experienced shortness of breath, forcing them to quickly leave the area. Unfortunately, Gabutero failed to leave the area.

Eventually, the Search and Rescue Team of Central 911 rescued Gabutero but was declared dead upon arrival at the Southern Philippines Medical Center, according to the police report.

Apo Agua further confirmed that the three surviving workers are now in stable condition. The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the potential hazards and risks associated with construction work and the importance of prioritizing safety measures.
