4 Firefighters Offer Free Ride Home to Applicant Trying His Luck at BFP

After a hard day of attempting to join the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), a group of four firefighters came to the assistance of a young guy who was patiently waiting for a ride home.

Eam Amor Valentin, a firefighter, took to social media to express the touching encounter they had with the young man, which reminded them of their own challenges as BFP applicants before achieving their dream of becoming firefighters.

Valentin described how they discovered the young man, who was dressed in a plain white shirt and denim pants, sitting on the sidewalk along Leon Garcia St. near Magsaysay Park, directly in front of the BFP Region 11 Office.

The firefighter mentioned that the young man had traveled all the way from Mabini, his village outside of Davao City, for the grueling BFP application process and was now waiting for a Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) to transport him back home.

“We conclude he’s an applicant and he’s maybe waiting for a PUV. Unfortunately, it’s around on or about 8:30 pm and PUVs are hard to find already. We offered him a ride as we also thought we’re in the same direction – and we were correct. He’s bound for Mabini and ours is Davao Oriental,” Valentin said.

Despite their reservations, the firefighters approached the young man and identified themselves as members of the BFP. Despite his timidity, the young man accepted their offer of a ride home with thanks and respect.

Valentin was moved to tears by the young man’s courtesy and humility, which reminded them of their own days as aspiring firefighters.

On the way home, the firefighters reflected on their own previous struggles and aspirations when they were still optimistic candidates hoping to join the esteemed BFP. They felt nostalgia and empathy after meeting the young man because they could identify with the obstacles he was encountering in his pursuit of becoming a fireman.

“We can relate and feel the struggles because before we became [firefighters], we were also once just like you – hopeful and persevering,” she added.

Valentin stated that giving the young man a ride home was a little way for them to give back and express their thanks for the benefits they had experienced on their own journey. They felt honored and grateful to have arrived at their current position as firefighters by the grace of God, and they were resolved to help others.
