Is it true that ‘About Us But Not About Us’ was first offered to John Lloyd Cruz?
A-list actor John Lloyd Cruz allegedly turned down the gay role in the Summer Metro Manila Film Festival 2023 entry About Us But Not About Us.
The said movie, directed by Jun Lana, received a lot of recognition during the Gabi ng Parangal. Many critics and moviegoers lauded the lead actors, Romnick Sarmenta and Elijah Canlas, for their performance.
The story revolves around the conversation between a college professor and his former student when they met again at a restaurant. They are both gay but one is already comfortable with his idea while the other one is still dealing with this aspect in his personality.
Based on the article by entertainment columnist Gorgy Rula in Pang-Masa, the role of Romnick Sarmenta was first offered to John Lloyd Cruz. The showbiz writer said that according to the source, the Happy ToGether actor already had a copy of the script.
“Ang nakarating na kuwento sa amin, matagal daw kina Lloydie ang script na ito, na naghintay naman ang mga taga-Ideafirst. Pero ang ending, hindi rin tinanggap. Gusto raw nilang mas meaty na role,” Rula shared.
Eventually, the role was given to Romnick Sarmenta and this has become a huge help for his acting career. He was the Best Actor award in the first-ever Summer MMFF.
“Baka mas gusto ng management team ni Lloydie ng mas malaking project na sa kanya naka-focus ang takbo ng kuwento,” the showbiz writer said. Rula also mentioned that Lloydie’s team might want a different kind of project for his movie comeback.
Rulie also shared that John Lloyd shot a film with Jasmin Curtis-Smith but it was not able to be part of the Summer MMFF.
