Rey Valera talked about this particular song he wrote
Veteran singer-songwriter Rey Valera, who has written a lot of OPM hits, revealed that he regretted writing this song.
Rey has done songs that have become part of many people’s lives. He is the man behind the hit classic songs like Maging Sino Ka Man, Kung Kailangan Mo Ako, Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko, Malayo Pa Ang Umaga, and many more.
Among the songs he wrote and performed, there was one that he wished he did not write. In a recent interview, based on the article in Inquirer, Rey revealed that Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo is that song.
The singer-songwriter said that this has become part of a lot of breakups, especially during the height of its popularity.
“Kasi, later ko na lang na-realize na ang mga kanta palang ginagawa naming mga songwriter ay may epekto ‘yan sa isip ng ating mga kababayan. Ikaw ang dahilan kung bakit nagkahiwalay ‘yung dalawa, eh, dahil naisabuhay nila ‘yung nasa isip nilang kanta,” Rey Valera said.
For him, the song has the same feel with the National Anthem’s line “ang mamatay nang dahil sa ‘yo.” He said that patriotism encourages Filipinos to give their lives for the country and Rey said that Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo is basically the same.
“Bagama’t hindi mo nararamdaman na maghihiwalay kayo, konting ano, parang mararamdaman mong magkakahiwalay kami. ‘Yan, pinagsisisihan ko ‘yang kantang ‘yan hanggang ngayon. Parang may nagawa akong kasalanan,” the singer-songwriter explained.
He added that the songs he wrote are different from what he is in real life. The songs are more about what he saw in his audience. Rey stressed that he was writing for a specific segment of society and he was thinking about what these people wanted to say and he will be the one to speak for them. This is how he would write his songs.
