Aljur Abrenica Offered First To Do Coco Martin's Role In 'Apag'

Why did Aljur Abrenica turn down the ‘Apag’ movie project?

Actor Aljur Abrenica was offered first to the role of actor Coco Martin in the movie Apag which is directed by Brillante Mendoza.

The movie is about the bond in a family and features the culinary expertise of Kapampangans. In a previous interview, Direk Brillante revealed that this movie was a big challenge for him.

It is produced by the Hong Kong Film Fest and the Pinoy director was told to exclude the usual unwholesome theme in his movies. However, he said that this will have a director’s cut version for the Summer Metro Manila Film Festival.

In a recent interview, based on the article in The Philippine Star, Direk Brillante shared that Coco Martin’s role was first offered to Aljur Abrenica. The cast members are all from Pampanga.

The director said as he knew Aljur is also a Kapampangan and there had been a long negotiation that was happening. “Pero siguro it’s not really meant sa kanya ‘yung project,” he said.

Then, the actor called to back out just before the pull-out. “Hindi niya sinabi at all. Wala na siya,” he said. Direk Brillante shared that the manager of Aljur said that it appeared that the actor was “natakot.”

“Nung nag-Kapampangan daw siya sa kanila, sabi, sabi nung manager… pinagtawanan daw siya ng mga kapatid niya saka nung tatay niya. ‘Yung parang… alam mo ‘yun? Hindi authentic. Siguro na-insecure siya,” the director shared.

He added that he did not expect that Aljur would totally depart from the project. Fortunately, Coco was there to fill the role. Direk Brillante admitted that he was quite worried when Aljur backed out because they were already ready to start the shoot.

“Nung araw na ‘yun, nagkausap kami ni Coco. Sabi ko, ‘Ewan ko, may problema ako.’ ‘Pag may problema siya sa set ng ‘Probinsyano,’ tumatawag ‘yan. Ang sabi ko, ‘May problema ako, ganyan-ganyan! Si Aljur, nag-back out!” the filmmaker shared.

At that time, Coco was able to have his break and he presented to take the role. Direk Brillante was a bit apprehensive and so he called the actor once again to make sure that it was okay for him to do the movie.
