Harry Styles’ performances are usually memorable because they are packed with surprises. This happened when he helped a couple in getting engaged while on his “Love on Tour” leg in Manila.

But when fellow Harries (Harry Styles fans) learned that the concert proposal was a fake, what had initially been a lovely occasion turned into a source of outrage.

In case you missed it, on March 14 at the Philippine Arena, three-time Grammy Award-winning musician Harry Styles performed for his Filipino fans. Styles was drawn to a particular couple at the concert when one of the audience members, later identified as Michelle, held up a sign that read, “Harry, my [boyfriend] said he will propose if you duet with him!!! Make it happen [please].”

After seeing the placard, Harry’s face lighted up as he agreed to Michelle’s request and that of her partner Jeff, where the latter sang “Sign of Times” with Styles. Afterward, Jeff got down on one knee in the middle of a song after being prodded by the singer.

Michelle replied “yes” despite the lack of an engagement ring, earning the support of Harry Styles and the audience. Even the chorus of the song was altered by Styles, becoming “Just stop your crying, it’s a sign of the times because Michelle is marrying Jeff.”

The romantic proposal was a “sana all” moment, and it even went viral on social media for days. Yet when the proposal resurfaced over the weekend, people realized that it had been a hoax all along.

In the now-deleted post, the fan shared an image of the sign with the caption that said, “At nagulantang po ‘yung kasama ko dahil wala siyang ka id-idea [sic] (My companion was surprised because he had no idea [about the concert proposal]).”

When other Harries saw the post, they concluded that Michelle and Jeff’s engagement was staged. Harries immediately cried foul and denounced them on social media.

The fake concert proposal “ruined the moment for everyone who is proposing for real,” many fans bemoaned during Styles’ performances. Due to the absence of an engagement ring and the fact that the proposal wasn’t sincere, some people said they felt icky. As opposed to their staged proposal, other people noted that Styles could have used the time to sing other songs.
