Teves Could Not Return to the Country Over Fear of His Security

Lawyer Reveals Teves Fears His Security When He Returned to the Philippines

The legal counsel of Negros Oriental 3rd District Rep Arnulfo “Arnie” Teves revealed that his client feared for his security when he returned to the Philippines.

Teves’ lawyer Atty. Toby Diokno legal stated at the Pandesal Forum that Teves has been unable to travel home to the Philippines owing to security concerns. According to the paperwork from the Office of the House Secretary General Reginald Velasco, Teves was authorized to travel to the United States for personal reasons from February 28 to March 9.

Last week, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla stated that Teves had left the United States and was “somewhere in Asia.” According to Diokno, the apprehension stems from the revocation of his license to carry firearms, murder complaints filed against him in the incident of killings in 2019, and other raids conducted on his residences.

He will be protected and will not be abandoned, Remulla stated in an ambush interview. In connection with the 2019 deaths, the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) filed three murder complaints against Teves last week. The CIDG then raided Teves’ homes in Negros Oriental seeking guns.

“It’s easy to say go home but when you know that’s the future for you and that’s what’s being prepared for you — not because you don’t want to answer for the baseless accusations — but it’s actually more of security,” said Diokno, based on the interview.

Previously, another legal counsel, Atty. Teves will confront the allegation, according to Ferdinand Topacio. On March 9, the suspects claimed that a “Cong Teves” was responsible for the death of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo. Teves quickly stated that he was not involved in the attack on the governor, nor was his brother, former Bayawan City Mayor Pryde Henry Teves.
