Eat Bulaga Humble Beginning Recalled Amid Show’s Rumored Rebranding

Eat Bulaga had to go through a tough time before it soared

Longest-running noontime show Eat Bulaga had a humble beginning and this was recalled amid the rumors that it will undergo rebranding.

These past few days, fans of the noontime show have been talking about the allegation that it is facing an internal conflict. Eventually, it is reported that TAPE Inc., the producer of the show, is now handled by Romeo Jalosjos, Jr.

It was formerly headed by Tony Tuviera. As of this writing, the management of the show has not yet released an official statement about the rumored rebranding.

In a recent article in PEP, the humble beginning of Eat Bulaga was recalled. Former TAPE Inc. chief operating officer Malou Choa-Fagar shared that the first 10 years were a struggling endeavor for them.

They had a hard time beating their rival Student Canteen. There were no advertisements that came in. During the first month of airing, EB only got a 5.2 percent rating while their rival got 57.6 percent.

Because of this, it was hard for them to get sponsors and so there was no revenue. Even though they reached the point where their rating was higher than their rival, it was still hard for them.

Siyempre kung network, siyempre madaling ibenta. Kaya lang kasi kami, blocktimer. We’re the only blocktimer that’s existing [at the time]. Wala nang iba. Ayun. So, we we’re struggling, hindi kami sumusuweldo,” Choa-Fagar shared.

Back then, she said that they were aiming for the A-B market only to realize that this was not their market. “It’s the C, D, E that’s giving you the ratings,” she said.

Since their show was unpopular with the viewers, it was also hard for them to invite guests even though they would pay them. “Ganun kahirap. Ganun kahirap iyong dinaanan ng Eat Bulaga!” she added.
