Stray Cat Becomes “Pest Control Officer” at a University in Iloilo

University in Iloilo Hires a Stray Cat to Become a “Pest Control Officer”

A stray cat at a research university in Iloilo City goes viral on social media after it was hired to become a “pest control officer”.

Cats may be very effective pest control agents. Cats are natural predators and have been observed hunting and killing tiny animals such as mice, rats, and other rodents. Cats have been employed as pest controllers for thousands of years, and many people still rely on them to keep pests out of their homes and businesses.

Cats not only have a natural hunting drive, but their very presence might dissuade rodents from entering a property in the first place. Because mice and rats are inherently terrified of their predators, the scent of a cat can be enough to keep them away.

Meanwhile, a student from Iloilo Science and Technology University shared a stray cat that served as a “Pest Control Officer” on campus. Christian Joseph Laña shared that their pest control officer was named “Tanjie”.

“Stray cat po si Tanjie tapos palagi po siya sa tapat ng Safety, Security, Environment and Disaster Mitigation Management Office. The university said Tanjie [eventually] became a pest control officer because they saw Tanjie roving the university and catching some mice,” said Laña.

According to reports, the university decided last week to permanently house Tanjie and certify her as a Pest Control Officer after watching her catching rodents in their classrooms. The university is supposed to have a budget for their cute officer’s food.

Laña planned to photograph Tanjie to see if the other students’ allegations about him being “suplado” were real. He explained that he observed Tanjie seated on the office chair and decided to photograph him before stroking his head.

“Suplado daw si Tanjie so I was curious about him. Isang umaga, nakita ko si Tanjie, nakaupo sa Office chair kaya kinuhanan ko ng litrato tapos hinimas ko ang kaniyang ulo. Bumaba siya sa upuan tapos ayun po, I was so amazed dahil noong tinutok ko ‘yung camera ko sa kaniya, nagpa-cute po siya,” said Laña.

Laña did not hesitate to post Tanjie’s images on Facebook since she thought they were adorable. On the other hand, netizens praised the university’s adorable Pest Control Officer. Laña’s post has received over 15,000 reactions, 800 comments, and 24,000 shares so far.
