Iconic Coconut Bent Tree in Siargao Dies

SIARGAO COCONUT BENT TREE – The Local Government Unit of Pilar reported that the iconic coconut bent tree in Siargao finally collapsed.

With its swing that drops to float along the enchanting Maasin River, the distinctively bent coconut tree has been one of Siargao’s major tourist attractions. On Wednesday, Feb. 22, the popular coconut tree fell, according to the Local Government Unit of Pilar.

“It is with great sadness to receive news from the community that the well-known ‘Coconut Bent Tree’ in Litik Maasin River has reached its end,” Pilar’s Tourism Culture & Arts said in an FB post.

Many netizens were saddened by the news that the famous Coconut Bent Tree in Litik Maasin River in Siargao fell. The tree is famous for being bent so that its very trunk is right above the river, while other trees like it are fertile on both sides.

The Coconut Bent Tree is a favorite for tourists to climb to take pictures or to relax before jumping into the river. Tourists visit the river because of the Coconut Bent Tree, a reason to provide a livelihood to the residents here.

When super typhoon Odette hit the area in 2021, the tree survived, but its root foundation weakened and eventually gave way.

Following the news, many netizens posted their throwback photos taken at the Coconut Bent Tree when they went to Siargao. They said they were lucky to be able to take a picture of the tree before it fell.

A female netizen posted, “Today, the most popular bent coconut tree in Siargao has fallen. May hangganan talaga ang lahat. Thanks for the memories.”

Caption of another, “Thank you for the memories. So sad that the popular ‘bent coconut tree,’ which has become a fixture in Siargao’s Maasin River has reached its end huhuhu.”

Another said, “Blessed to see it in person bago siya masira.”

One sentimental post: “The Coconut Bent Tree was a symbol of Siargao’s natural beauty. It’s sad to see it gone, but we’ll always remember it fondly.”
