8 Filipinos Arrested in Myanmar Over Violations of Immigration Laws

Eight (8) Filipinos seek help from the Philippine government after being arrested in Myanmar over violations of immigration laws.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), at least eight Filipinos were arrested in Myanmar near the Thai border for breaking foreign immigration restrictions. According to the report, the Filipinos were apprehended by Myanmar police in Myawaddy.

Kiela Samson was detained, and his parents asked the government to help them find their son after she couldn’t be reached after being arrested by Myawaddy town police. According to her relatives, Samson was apprehended after boarding a boat in Mae Sot, Thailand, before crossing into Myanmar.

Filipinos Myanmar Arrested

“Coordination and representations are continuing for eight Filipinos confirmed in the custody of the Myanmar police in Myawaddy for immigration violations,” said Ma. Teresita Daza, DFA spokesperson, this Wednesday.

Based on the report, three years after the Mae Sot border was reopened, only Thai and Burmese nationals can cross into their respective countries. This, however, is only possible on the friendship bridge.

It is prohibited for outsiders to cross the Moei River from one country to another. Only Yangon, Mandalay, and Nay Pyi Taw airports are authorized entry gateways into Myanmar from Thailand.

According to Daza, the Philippine Embassy in Yangon is still coordinating with authorities not only in Myawaddy but also in Nay Pyi Taw “to ensure the safety and well-being of the said Filipinos and assist them in returning home as soon as possible,” and Myanmar authorities have assured cooperation in this regard.
