BI is Alarm by the Increasing Number of Foreigners Posing as Filipinos
The Bureau of Immigration is alarmed by the increasing number of foreigners posing as Filipinos to enter the Philippines.
BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco voiced alarm about the rise of foreigners impersonating Filipinos. A Hong Kong-Canadian national was apprehended this month at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) for impersonating a Filipino.
This week, BI’s travel control and enforcement unit (TCEU) apprehended two additional foreigners attempting to fly to Vietnam at the same airport. Nong Thi Luyen, 35, and Hailan Zhang, 36, were recognized, based on the report.
When Nong, who showed a Philippine passport with a Philippine name, couldn’t answer basic questions regarding his identification, immigration agents questioned him. He eventually revealed that he is a Vietnamese national who immigrated to the country nearly two decades ago.
According to Tansingco, Nong pretended to be Filipino in order to avoid paying for overstaying. The passport, according to the investigation, belongs to someone else. Meanwhile, Hailan, who was carrying identification documents and permits and a Philippine passport, claimed to be a businessman.
The passport was authentic, according to BI’s forensic documents laboratory, but the BI departure stamp was a forgery. The three are being held at the BI’s warden facility in Taguig City pending deportation on allegations of violating the Philippine Immigration Act.
