Many Filipinos are members of the Social Security System. More commonly called SSS, it is a state-run social insurance institution where employees of private companies in the Philippines can apply for membership for insurance.
Aside from employees of private firms, the SSS membership is also open to self-employed individuals, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), non-working spouses of SSS members, and voluntary members.
Every month, the SSS members contribute a certain amount to the social insurance institution based on the rate set for them. The rates depend on the source of income and the amount earned by the member every month.
