Maria Ressa Acquitted For Four Tax Evasion Charges

The Court of Tax Appeals released a decision in favor of Maria Ressa

Rappler CEO Maria Ressa, who is also a Nobel Prize awardee, was acquitted by the Court of Tax Appeals for four tax evasion charges on Wednesday.

To recall, three counts of violation of Section 255 of the National Internal Revenue Code (NIRC) for incorrect and inaccurate information on the income tax return for 2015 were filed against her, as well as the value-added tax returns for the third and fourth quarters of 2015.

Aside from those, she was also charged with one count of violation of Section 254 of the NIRC, also known as tax evasion, based on the article in GMA News.

Then, Ressa was arraigned at the Pasig Regional Trial Court in 2020 on charges of failing to report sales receipts from the issuance and sale of Philippine Depositary Receipts (PDRs) in the second quarter of 2015. It was alleged by the prosecutors that there was a P294,258.58 deficiency.

Maria Ressa received these charges from the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte. On January 18, the CTA First Division promulgated the acquittal of the Rappler CEO and the Rappler Holdings Corp.

The journalist is also facing a cyber libel case filed by businessman Wilfredo Keng. This is because of a Rappler article that was published accusing the businessman of having connections with former Chief Justice Renato Corona who was impeached in 2012.

In October last year, it was reported that Maria Ressa’s motion for reconsideration for the cyber libel case filed against her was denied by the Court of Appeals (CA).
