Maria Ressa Cyber Libel Case Update
Maria Ressa Cyber Libel – The Court of Appeals denied the motion for reconsideration that Rappler CEO Maria Ressa and former researcher Reynaldo Santos Jr. regarding the guilty decision that the Manila Regional Trial Court released against them.
CA supports Manila RTC’s decision dated June 15, 2020, stating that Ressa and Santos are “guilty beyond reasonable doubt for violation of Section 4(c)4 of Republic Act No. 10175, otherwise known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.” To recall, in July, the CA also junked Maria Ressa and Reynaldo Santos’s appeal.
Based on the resolution that Inquirer reporter Tetch Torres-Tupas shared, this crime has a punishment of imprisonment of six months and one day to six years, eight months, and twenty days.
This cyber libel case was filed by businessman Wilfredo Keng against Ressa and Santos regarding an article accusing him of having a connection with former Chief Justice Renato Corona.
The said issue has reached international media outlets. In September, President Bongbong Marcos was asked about the Rappler CEO’s situation under his administration. He said that although the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has ordered the news site to shut down, still it is freely operating.
This SEC’s decision was prompted by the supposed “violation of constitutional and statutory restrictions on foreign ownership in mass media.”
When it comes to Maria Ressa Cyber Libel Case, PBBM said that as he is in the executive branch, he has nothing to do with the job being done under the judiciary.
Ressa founded Rappler in January 2012 together with a group of fellow Filipino journalists as well as technopreneurs. Before establishing her own news site, Ressa first worked in PTV4. She also became CNN’s bureau chief in Manila. The Rappler CEO also served as ABS-CBN news division while writing for CNN and The Wall Street Journal.
