‘Stop SIM Card Registration’ – Group Calls Citing Some Problems in Registering

Groups Calls for Stop of SIM Card Registration Citing Some Registration Issues

STOP SIM CARD REGISTRATION – The group Junk SIM Registration Network wants the SIM registration stopped citing some problems in registering.

Many Filipinos have already registered their SIM cards to make sure that their SIMs will stay activated and they can avail the services of the telecommunication providers. Many people have registered to at least two (2) telco providers because they use at least two (2) SIMs of different networks.

The measure mandating the SIM card holders to register is the first law signed by President Bongbong Marcos. It was in December 2022 when the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the law was released. The SIM cardholders are given 180 days to register.

Globe, Smart, and DITO are among the telco providers that launched online means for the registration. However, amid the registration period, a group calls for a stop on the SIM card registration.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the group Junk SIM Registration Network wants a stop on the SIM card registration citing the problems of some people in registering and the “threat” to the privacy of SIM card holders.

According to the group’s spokesperson, Maded Batara III, they receive a lot of reports from people who complain that are not only facing difficulties in registering but some individuals also do not have ID to register. In some cases, the SIM card owners allegedly cannot upload their ID or selfie in the registration form.

The group stressed that the measure will not lessen cybercrime incidents. Based on the report, as to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), they are already coordinating with the telco providers for assistance to those who are living in remote areas and places wherein the signal is not good.

According to NTC, more than 17 million SIMs have been registered already. It is over 10% of the active SIMs in the country.
