Lea Salonga is one of the Pinoys who was able to perform on the international stage
Award-winning theater actress Lea Salonga shared her thoughts on breaking into the international scene.
Lea has penetrated the international stage for many years now. Her stints in theater have been internationally recognized. The fact that she is also the only singer who gave singing voice to two Disney princesses, Jasmine and Mulan, is something so amazing.
However, in a recent interview, based on the article in One News, Lea admitted that going global is not easy. She said that there are still struggles in having Asian representation on the international stage.
She is optimistic that more doors of opportunity will open for Asian artists as how opportunities came her way and because of this, she considers herself “extremely fortunate.”
Lea is looking forward to the opportunities that will also be given to the younger generations of performers in Asia. “I’m not selfish with (regard) to this,” she said.
The singer-actress stressed that making it to the international stage is not always the easiest thing. She cited the Broadway musical “KPOP” which is about Korean pop music and culture.
Lea shared that two cast members are Filipinos. “One of whom is somebody I’ve known since she was eight years old. So, it’s not the easiest thing,” she said. This received mixed reviews and after 17 regular performances, the producers announced that it will be closed.
She can say that the talent that was on stage was incredible but it is not always the reason for a show’s longevity.
“I’m just hoping that creative forces are not discouraged and continue to write and continue to direct, continue to create, because it gives the community at large a lot of hope,” Lea Salonga said.
