Coco Martin, Jodi Experiences Abroad Inspiration Behind ‘Labyu with an Accent’

Coco Martin and Jodi Sta Maria talked about their MMFF movie

The story of Labyu with an Accent is inspired by the experiences that Coco Martin and Jodi Sta Maria had when they lived abroad.

For the first time, Coco and Jodi worked together in a movie. This is one of the official entries for the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) this year. The movie is under Star Cinema, the film company of ABS-CBN.

Coco said that he was inspired by what he went through when he was working in Canada, based on the article in The Philippine Star.

When I started out as an actor in indie films, hindi naman talaga artista ang gusto ko, kundi talaga to work abroad,” the actor said about his mindset as he thought that indie films have greater tendencies to be shown abroad.

“Kasi nga ‘pag sinabi mo na indie films, malaki ang potential na ilabas sa abroad. And yung mga na-experience ko dun pinasok ko dito sa pelikula,” Coco Martin shared. The actor added that Jodi shared also her experiences working abroad and these were included in the movie.

Coco shared that Jodi’s story inspired the story of their movie. Jodi worked in Los Angeles years ago. The actress shared that as actors, they understand the struggles that Pinoys working abroad are going through because they also experienced the same.

“It happened to us. We experienced that and I guess yun yung beauty nito, it’s relatable, hindi lang sa amin kundi sa ibang manonood,” Jodi said.

In the movie, Jodi Sta Maria played the character of Tricia, a businesswoman based in the US. She caught her business partner-turned-fiancé cheating on her and that was what made her return to the Philippines to mend her broken heart.

Then, she met Gabo, the character of Coco Martin, who is looking for a fresh start. Tricia falls in love with him after doing the “Ultimate Jowa Experience.” Tricia went back to the US and Gabo grabbed his cousin’s offer to go abroad to follow her.

In order to end Tricia’s father’s desire to pair her again with her ex-fiance, she made Gabo a wealthy businessman and her boyfriend. Jodi shared that there were instances when they would just go with the flow and a certain “kilig” would flow. “It’s very important that the scene is organic,” Coco Martin shared.
