Solon Pushes Derma Treatment for Military Officers of the Philippines

Camiguin Representative Jurdin Jesus Romualdo pushes for derma treatment for military officers of the Philippines.

Romualdo stated during a session of the Commission on Appointments that the soldiers should have access to derma therapy. Romualdo inquired with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) about a skin care program for soldiers.

Military Officers Derma Treatment

Romualdo recalled a soldier whose foot he treated for athlete’s foot, also known as alipunga. According to him, a skin condition in soldiers is a severe issue, especially if it interferes with their work.

“May tatanong lang ako kasi I was listening to all. Merong [ophthalmologist], merong [orthologist], merong surgeon pero gusto ko lang malaman if you have a program on derma and skin diseases in the Armed Forces kasi ngayon ho problema po ‘yon eh,” Romualdo asked AFP Surgeon General Fatima Claire Navarro.

“Because before, there was an Army [man] taga-Camiguin, kinuha ko. Kawawa talaga kasi pinagaling ko ‘yung paa niya ang daming athlete’s foot kasi Scout Ranger eh,” he added.

Based on the report of GMA News, Romualdo stated that this is a big concern for military personnel since they will be unable to perform their jobs if their skin diseases are not treated.

He continued: “Are we going to include that ngayon sa program natin sa Armed Forces the skin diseases or derma kasi kapag sinabi mong derma, mukha, pero generally marami pala eczema, lahat psoriasis. Do we have that program?”

Navarro’s reaction was that they suggested to the AFP chief that the complete “health protection” of the soldiers be prioritized. This is not just about the physical element of cardiovascular health, but also about various diseases that might impact soldiers because they live in barracks and cannot maintain very good cleanliness while on operations, according to Navarro.

“So we are now looking in certain diseases not just the lifestyle disease but those that affect [them]… So this would also include the dermatologic, of course, the cases with stigma and discrimination like HIV, tuberculosis aside from the basic wellness of being physically fit for them,” added Navarro.
