Camiguin Rep. Romualdo Broaches Idea to Drill Volcano to Prevent Eruption
Camiguin Rep. Jurdin Jesus “JJ” Romualdo has broached his idea Idea “Bubutasan ang bulkan lalabas ang lava para hindi pumutok”.
Numerous politicians did not waste the opportunity to ask questions from Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Science Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. during the confirmation hearing.
Jurdin Jesus “JJ” Romualdo grabbed the chance to ask his question to Solidum and broached his unusual idea to prevent volcano eruption, which could cause damage to properties and casualties.
“I want to ask if the material used for rockets that can withhold heat in going to the moon exploration can be used to drill holes on volcanoes. The lava will come out so that the volcano will not erupt. Is there a study on that?” Romualdo asked.
“I’m so curious. Imagine, [space rockets] do not melt when they return from space. Why can’t we use it to drill holes so that volcanoes will no longer erupt?” Romualdo added.
Solidum explained that drilling holes in the volcano could pose more risk and may increase the chance of an eruption. He said that magma is more enormous and humankind might not able to control it.
“It might actually explode as we lessen the pressure. If we lessen the pressure of the volcano at the top, it might trigger the sudden rise of magma and it will explode. That’s why nobody has tried to do that,” Solidum said.
Romualdo raised the question because he is a native of Camiguin Island, which is near Mount Hibok-Hibok, one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines.
