Philippines Bans Child Marriage for Protection of the Youth
PHILIPPINES BANS CHILD MARRIAGE – The law prohibiting child marriage in the Philippines has been signed and will soon take effect.
The Republic Act 11596 or the law that prevents child marriage in the Philippines or minors from getting into marriage was signed and will soon take effect following the signing of its implementing rules and regulations or IRR.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Bagong Henerasyon partylist Representative Bernadette Herrera said that child marriages sacrifice education. She explained that when a female teenager gets married and pregnant, the possibility is she will stop from schooling for her pregnancy.
According to the report, Maguindanao Alliance of Youth Advocate chairperson Juanday Ismael expressed his support to the law in the Philippines that bans child marriage. His support to the law came amid child marriage being part of the tradition in the Bangsamoro region most especially in indigenous communities. He stressed that he supports the law for the protection of the youth.
The Philippines is on the 12th spot when it comes to countries with the highest number of child brides reaching 726,000. Based on the data, one (1) out of 6 Pinays get married before they turn 18 years old.
The law in the Philippines that bans child marriage will take effect 15 days after the signing of its IRR or before 2023. Under the law, even the one who officiated the wedding may face penalties. From six (6) to 12 years of jail imprisonment and at least P40,000.00 were stated as penalties for those who will refuse to abide the law.
