When it comes to sentence types, there are a lot and it is best to first get to know the basic ones. One of these basic types is the “compound sentence”. It is very easy to identify once you understand how it is formed.

COMPOUND SENTENCE – Apart from being a sentence structure, here are its meaning and examples.

Just like the discussion about the sentences. The kinds of sentences is discussed first before the different sentence structures in English.

In this article, we will discuss one of the four(4) sentence structures in the English subject.

Compound Sentence Sentence Structure

One of the sentence structures in English is the compound sentence. It is composed of two(2) independent clauses or clauses that can stand alone. They can be separated without any of them being left with an incomplete idea.

Examples:

  • The dog was running after the cat while the cat was chasing the mouse.
    • 1st Independent Clause – The dog was running after the cat
    • 2nd Independent Clause – The cat was chasing the mouse
  • The firemen put out the fire while the police were securing the area.
    • 1st Independent Clause – The firemen put out the fire
    • 2nd Independent Clause – The police were securing the area
  • The teacher gave the exam papers then the student intern took over the task to guard the kids.

  • The melon shake is very sweet while their coffee lacks sugar.
