Comelec Gives Verdict on Electoral Protest Filed against Honey Lacuna’s Victory as Manila Mayor
COMELEC – The Commission on Elections released its decision on the electoral protest against Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna.
Last May, both local and national elections were held in the Philippines. It is undeniably one of the elections that really marked the country’s history. There were several candidates for president and vice president.
In the local government, most then incumbent officials ran either for re-election or for other positions in the government. One of those who ran for another position is Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna who was then the vice mayor of the capital city.
Then Manila Mayor Isko Moreno was one of the 10 presidential candidates for May 2022 Elections. Lacuna had his support in the mayoralty race in the capital city. She won a landslide victory in the election for mayor.
However, an electoral protest was filed by her mayoralty race opponent, Alexander Lopez, against Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna before the Commission on Elections. Recently, Comelec released its decision on the said electoral protest.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Comelec junked the electoral protest against Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna after finding it “insufficient in form and content”. Lopez accused Lacuna of massive acts of vote buying and also questioned her landslide victory with 538,595 votes. He got 166,908 votes.
Manila Mayor Lacuna expressed his gratitude over the decision of the poll body on the electoral protest filed against her victory. She stressed that the body recognized that the accusations made against her were “allegations that have no actual proof”. She also said that the Manileños have expressed and put their trust on the current administration.
