Bongbong Marcos was asked about Maria Ressa and Rappler

President Bongbong Marcos shared his stand on the cyber libel case against journalist Maria Ressa and the issue faced by the social media news site Rappler.

The case was filed by businessman Wilfredo Keng who went against a Rappler article about his alleged connection to former Chief Justice Renato Corona.

He pointed out the clear delineation of powers in the political system in the Philippines that is pretty much derived from the system being followed by the U.S.A. – the executive, legislature, and judiciary.

“It is highly improper for the Executive to interfere in either Legislature or Judiciary,” he said. When it comes to the order by the Philippine government to shut down Rappler, Pres. Marcos said that it was determined that the news site is a foreign enterprise and this is not allowed by the law in the Philippines.

However, despite the order to shut down, PBBM said that Rappler is still operating and anyone can still access its site and the articles on the internet.

Back in June, during the East-West Center’s International Media Conference in Honolulu, Maria Ressa announced that the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (PSEC), based on a report from CNN.

That time, Ressa said that they will appeal to reverse the decision. “We have existing legal remedies all the way up to the highest court of the land. It is business as usual for us since in our view, this is not immediately executory without court approval,” the journalist said.
