A trans teen in Tacloban City has expressed her gratitude after her school allowed her to wear a female school uniform.

The 17-year-old trans senior high-school student identified as Sessy Maravillo thanked Leyte National High School in Tacloban City for giving students the freedom to wear the uniform of their choice.

Maravillo narrated that she has been wearing a male uniform since elementary and junior high school to comply with the school policy. The LGBT community expressed their sympathy toward Sessy for suffering discrimination.

“Thankful ako masyado kasi mas naging comfortable na akong pumasok sa school kasi naibsan na po ang discrimination and criticism about sa gender identity ko. Every time papasok po ako, I feel the love and support po from my alma mater,” Maravillo said.

The grade 12 student is hoping that other schools will allow students under the so-called ‘third gender to have the right to choose uniforms based on their gender preference. She said that it will help students to build confidence.

“I hope that in the near future, other schools will also conform to the gender-friendly wearing of uniform. Thus, it does not only intend to help in amplifying gender acceptance in our society but as well as helping our fellowmen to build strong confidence within them,” Maravillio added.
