Cayetano Says PH Can Use Japan Economic Success as ‘Roadmap’
Senator Allan Peter Cayetano said that the Philippines can use the economic success of Japan as a roadmap to economic recovery.
Mylene Garcia-Albano has confirmed as the country’s next envoy to Japan during the Commission on Appointments (CA) plenary session, which was when Cayetano made the manifestation. He claimed that the Philippines’ connection with Japan is important if the country wants to change.
“Kung gusto nating baguhin ang Pilipinas (If we want to change the country), the friendship of Japan and the Philippines is very important. The model of Japan na dapang-dapa (which was devastated) but within 30 years became one of the strongest economies of the world can be our roadmap,” Cayetano said during the CA session.
Given the historical and economic ties between the two nations, Cayetano, who held the position of Foreign Affairs Secretary from 2017 to 2018, emphasized the significance of the country’s relations with Japan. Based on the article of Senate, he noted that after a “very harsh past” during World War II, the two nations have finally forged friendships.
He remarked that through help, funding, and technology, both the Philippines and Japan over the years discovered ways to go beyond reparations. Cayetano also paid tribute to the late Shinzo Abe, the prime minister of Japan.
Cayetano commended him for trying to steer the United States of America and its partnership through a difficult period under the previous administration. Cayetano emphasized that the Japanese took initiative, and Prime Minister Abe acted as a mediator in our relations with the US.
“I’d like to again pay tribute to Prime Minister Abe during the time when the Philippines and the US had a rough relationship under the Duterte administration,” he said.
“The Japanese stepped up and Prime Minister Abe played the role of bridging our relationship with the US,” Cayetano added.
