Darryl Yap reacted to the statement of the Carmelite Sisters on the mahjong scene in ‘Maid in Malacañang’
Director-writer Darryl Yap invited the Carmelite Sisters to watch his movie Maid in Malacañang as his reply to criticism that he got for the mahjong scene of “Cory” and the nuns.
In the controversial movie about the last 72 hours of the Marcoses in the Palace, before they were forced to leave, there was a portion that surprised many people, especially the critics of the prominent political clan.
The said portion showed “Cory”, played by actress Giselle Sanchez, with three nuns, and they were playing mahjong. Prior to that, “Cory” had a phone conversation in which she said, “Get them out of the Philippines.”
In line with this, the Carmelite Sisters released a statement clarifying their side. Back in February 1986, former President Cory Aquino stayed at the Carmelite Monastery in Cebu. The nuns stressed that they spent their time praying and fasting for the resolution amid the political turbulence in the country.
Following this, Direk Darryl Yap released a statement through Vincentiments social media sites. He invited the nuns to watch his movie. “I would like to invite our Sisters to watch the film; if they are ostentatious about details, I don’t think there is a need for this ‘ouch’ and ‘involvement,'” the controversial director said.
He added that there is nothing wrong with playing mahjong because it is a form of recreation and a bonding activity among friends. Direk Darryl also addressed what Monsignor Joseph Tan said that they were not consulted about that particular scene.
The director stressed that it was not directly stated in the scene that those nuns are the Carmelite Sisters. Then, he quipped, “Pero kung talagang dapat po ikinunsulta ko ang paggawa ko ng pelikula, hihingi ako ng advise kay Valak kung paano, kailan, at kanino siya kumunsulta.”
In a recent interview by Daphne Osena, Direk Darryl Yap clarified that when former President Cory Aquino had the said phone call, she was already in Manila. He also said that he has documents to support that the playing of mahjong really happened.
