What is narrative writing? Here are some tips for writing this.
NARRATIVE WRITING – Essentially, narrative writing is story writing, and here are some tips to master this skill.
Writing a story is writing a narrative and in writing a narrative, you can also choose to make fiction or nonfiction. And as long as a piece is telling a story through a narrative structure, it is narrative writing.
Here are its different types:
- Linear narrative – this is when a story is told in chronological order the same as most books, movies, TV shows, and other media pieces.
- Nonlinear narrative – as the term tells, the events are told in nonchronological order.
- Viewpoint narrative – this is when the story is focused on the perspective of the narrator.
- Descriptive narrative – this focuses on the setting, characters, and objects of the story which sets the reader to total immersion in the story.
Here are its characteristics:
- Use metaphors, similes, personification, and onomatopoeia to evoke feelings as its descriptive language.
- It must have one character. In some narratives, the narrator is the only character. But to some, it has several which include protagonist and antagonist.
- It has a plot or series of events, setting, and theme.
- It has a beginning, middle, and ending.
When it comes to choosing a genre, you may choose between fantasy, science fiction, romance, mystery, or others that suits your story and preference.
If you want to master this skill, you have to learn from the experts or experienced. Reading a lot and listening to the stories of others will also improve your writing skills. This is the same with watching movies and TV shows. These media pieces tell stories.
But it doesn’t stop there, in order to learn, you must practice regularly. You will get better in time through the learnings you get from studying, listening, reading, and others.
In writing a narrative, the following skills must also be acquired:
- organization skills
- making entertaining beginnings
- being elaborate in details and main events
- creating suspense and tension
- satisfying ending
