Netizens Slam Boy Scouts of the Philippines For Burning National Flag Without Knowing the Main Reason
The Boy Scouts of the Philippines earned a massive amount of criticism from the netizens after burning the national flag.
Over the past few weeks, the video footage of several boy scouts burning a Philippine flag last June 12, 2022, during the observance of Philippine Independence Day. The video has been taken in the middle of the program at Luneta Park.
Unfortunately, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines got shocked after receiving a lot of negative reactions regarding the video. Numerous netizens lambasted the boy scouts who burned the flag during the ceremony.
“Doon ako parang nanlumo yung lack of awareness of our people tungkol sa ginawang pagsusunog di sana kung alam nila wala sanang ganyang gulo,” Boy Scouts of the Philippines Secretary General Sct. Lt. Rogelio Villa Jr” said.
However, the organization explained that the action is a part of Republic Act Number 8491 or Heraldic Code of the Philippines, which allows the burning of worn-out flags before replacing them with a new ones.
Republic Act Number 8491, Chapter 1, Sections 14
A flag worn out through wear and tear shall not be thrown away. It shall be solemnly burned to avoid misuse or desecration. The flag shall be replaced immediately when it begins to show signs of wear and tear.
Burning a worn-out flag is one of the mandates of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the Philippines or known as the “Flag worn out ceremony”. The ashes are usually buried in Imus, Cavite at Dambana ng Pambansang Watawat.
Individuals who have worn out flags can also surrender them to the BSP office for disposal.
