Mond Gutierrez recalled the moment of his coming out
TV host Mond Gutierrez shared his thoughts on why it is difficult for celebrities in the Philippine entertainment industry to come out.
Mond bravely revealed his gender preference last August 2021. Coming out as gay, he said that the realization struck him during the pandemic. In an interview to mark this milestone in his life, he said that he is thankful that he received love and support from family and friends.
It took him many years before finally decided to reveal his true identity and embrace his real self. In a recent Super Human podcast of famous YouTuber Wil Dasovich, Mond Gutierrez acknowledged the fact that it is not easy for celebrities in the Philippines to reveal their real gender preference.
He said that one reason for this is the fear of losing brand deals. Mond said that luckily when he came out, his brand deals stick with him and supported him.
“But 10 years ago, 15 years ago, it won’t have been the case. I think now we live in a time where it’s more accepted,” he said adding that there are already a lot of people who broke that barrier and encouraging the public to be more accepting.
Mond also pointed out that a decade ago, there was a rampant stereotyping in showbiz that if a person is gay, he should put on a wig or do slapstick comedy. “It was very difficult for people to come out because it wasn’t really accepted,” Mond Gutierrez stressed.
He also said that coming out in the past would mean losing brand deals, losing jobs and that the entertainment industry did not make it easy for people to come out. For Mond, this is just similar to now because there are actors they know who are still not coming out.
