300 Residents Have To Leave Homes Following Masbate Earthquake Leaving Sinkhole

MASBATE EARTHQUAKE – Around 300 people have to leave their homes after the recent quake in Masbate left a sinkhole.

Every day, several earthquakes are jolting the different areas in the Philippines. The country is one of those nations lying along the Pacific Ring of Fire thus it is more prone to quakes.

It is the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) that records and releases details about quake. Through a bulletin, they issue information about its epicenter, the date and time it hit the place, the origin, and the depth of focus.

Furthermore, the agency state in its bulletin whether or not there are expected damages and aftershocks of a certain quake. It also records the intensity felt.

More than a week ago, a 6.6 magnitude Masbate earthquake was recorded by PHIVOLCS. It was followed by several aftershocks and some residents had to vacate their homes for safety.

Recently, the Mayor of Masbate gave an update regarding the situation in the area. Speaking to DZMM, Mayor Felipe Cabatana expressed that the Masbate earthquake left a sinkhole.

Due to the sinkhole, around 300 people cannot go back to their homes. They were advised to permanently leave their houses thus they are currently in schools.

Based on the report, Mayor Cabatana assured that the said residents were given cash aid by the Department of Social and Welfare Development (DSWD). Also, the local government is negotiating the lot that will be sold for these residents.

According to the City Mayor, the soil dropped that is why the water from the sea entered the homes of the residents. The water drops when it is low tide but the area never ran out of water.
