NBI Raids Former Smartmatic Employee’s House for Bringing Company Laptop at Home
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) raided the house of a former Smartmatic employee linked to security breach.
The NBI-Cybercrime Division (NBI-CCD) raided the home of former Smartmatic worker named Ricardo Argana with the power of a search warrant. However, the authorities did not find the suspect on his home.
The NBI personnel recovered the latter’s smartphone and some SD cards hidden in the room’s ceiling during the raid. The authorities have also dismantled the Wi-Fi router, which has an access to gadgets of five other suspects.
Mayette, Argana’s mother said that there is a time wherein her son did not report to work while holding a laptop. Ricardo explained that he was at work-from-home arrangement during that time.
“May isang araw na hindi siya pumasok. Tapos hindi ko naman alam kung kaninong laptop yun. Nagtanong ako, sabi ko work from home ka? Sabi niya, oo. Yun lang. Hindi ko naman siya pinapakialaman at pinapansin kasi normal naman yun ngayon wfh naman talaga,” Mayette said.
NBI-CCD chief Victor Lorenzo found out that Argana has only a contract of six months with Smartmatic.
The latter’s job is to fix machine’s possible glitches and he was allowed to navigate the controlled environment as a part of his work. He was given access to the control after explaining that he has to talk to people.
Argana returned the laptop to the company but it was already encrypted. The authorities will examine the suspect’s SD cars, mobile phone and Wi-Fi router. He will also face a total of 720 counts of unlawful access.
“I-access namin kung ano ang mga sasabihin niya, if he will be qualified as a state witness. Tignan natin kung ano ang sasabihin niya, Kaya lang kung hindi, continuous na sasampahan naming siya ng kaso at ang i-guarantee lang naman namin sa kanya is sooner or later mahuhuli at mahuhuli din siya,” Lorenzo said.
