21-Year-Old Hacker From Novaliches, Quezon Nabbed By NBI
21-YEAR-OLD HACKER FROM NOVALICHES – A hacker, 21 years of age from Novaliches, Quezon City, was arrested by the NBI.
According to GMA News, the NBI Cybercrime Division nabbed the hacker, who is identified as John Rayven Aquino for breaking into the accounts of at about 100,000 students of various colleges and universities.
Found on Aquino’s laptop were scripts and programs that are used to breach the accounts of about a hundred thousand students.
He, as well as the hackers’ group where he is a part of breached the said students’ accounts. Those students registered online for the upcoming school year.
“Sinabihan lang din po ako na subukan pasukin ‘yung mga schools. ‘Yung mga social media accounts po, wala po. Email saka password lang po,”
“Pero ang mga tao naman po ‘di ba, mostly iisang password lang po lahat? That’s how we do it po [sa] information po ng mga students kasi puwede po talaga ‘yong mabenta,”
Vic Lorenzo, chief of NBI Cybercrime Divison said the hackers compromised the said accounts, which allow them to edit the contents of the school’s database.
“So lahat ng content no’ng mga database ‘yon, puwede mong i-edit. Pag na-edit mo ‘yon, puwedeng i-edit mo ang grades, makopya ‘yong mga modules. Puwede ring exam. Kaya ‘yung whole integrity ng e-learning natin, mako-compromise,”
“Ang pinakamataas na isyu ngayon is ‘yung security ng mga e-learning facilities,”
Based on the report, Aquino said that he tried to change and vowed not to do this act again. The NBI is still determining the reach of the data breach.
Director of NBI Eric Distor urged schools to report any suspicious internet activities to authorities.
“I would like to encourage the universities and other schools to beef up their cybersecurity systems, especially during this time of transition to e-learning,”
