Typhoon Malakas or “Basyang” Enters PAR, According to PAGASA

The state weather bureau PAGASA reported that Typhoon Malakas or “Basyang” has already entered the Philippine area of responsibility. 

At 10:00 am on Tuesday noon (April 12, 2022), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported that Typhoon Malakas has entered the country’s vicinity. 

PAGASA named that Typhoon “Basyang” after entering PAR. Malakas has been spotted at 1,435 km East of Southern Luzon (15.4°N, 135.0°E). It has maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour and gustiness of 150 kph.

Basyang is moving 20 kph at a north-northwestward direction. It has strong winds or higher extending outwards up to 600 km from the center. However, the typhoon is not expected to directly affect the country’s weather conditions. 

The new tropical cyclone’s swells can generate moderate to rough seas over the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao. Sea travel remains risky, especially for small seacrafts, 

The weather agency also advised the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices to take precautionary measures to protect lives and properties. The people are also advised to obey instructions from local officials for their own safety, 

Typhoon Malakas

Earlier, the weather bureau said that Tropical Storm Agaton is expected to assimilate into the circulation of Typhoon Malakas. The combined effects of the two storms can increase the vertical wind shear of Basyang. 

Meanwhile, Agaton has passed in the vicinity of Marabut, Samar with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 75kph.
