CBCP Speaks on Church Becoming Vocal over Election Issues

CBCP – The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines stressed that there is no law that prevents the Church from speaking up amid the Election issues.

The May 2022 Elections are fast approaching. There were will be both local and national elections and a lot of people are undeniably hooked on politics and government now. Many are vocal about their stand on certain political issues and their support for specific candidates.

Several political groups and famous personalities in different fields pledged their support for certain candidates. Some of those who are vocal about their support are leaders of the church and it elicited negative reactions from other camps not endorsed by these leaders.

Recently, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines spoke about the church being vocal amid the election issues. CBCP President and Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David stressed that there is no law that prevents the church from being vocal.

“There is no law prohibiting any church or religion from speaking up,” Bishop David said.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the CBCP President further stressed that any church has the right and the responsibility to speak up most especially on the behalf of the underprivileged people. According to him, it is the primary responsibility of the one who serves the country and the church cannot stay mum on truth, goodness, and justice.

With regards to the separation of the Church and the State, Bishop David stressed that it was created for the government to respect the right to free exercise of one’s religion. He called on the voters to scrutinize the leaders and really demand accountability and transparency from them. He stressed that the country needs leaders who have sincere intentions and have the capacity to serve the country. He called on the voters to consider the LASER test in checking the candidates – Lifestyle, Action, Supporters, Election Conduct, and Reputation of a Candidate.
