Labor Group Seeks P100 Increase in Daily Minimum Wage Nationwide

Labor Group Calls Government to Approve P100 Hike in Daily Minimum Wage Nationwide

A labor group is calling the attention of Congress to legislate a P100 increase in the daily minimum wage nationwide amid surging oil prices.

The labor group Partido Manggagawa (PM) seeks for P100 legislated salary increase nationwide amid the increasing prices of petroleum products and basic commodities due to Russia-Ukraine war.

Aside from the salary hike, the group national chair Rene Magtubo also demands for cash aid, price discounts, and an emergency jobs creation program. He said that the proposed hike is justifiable since the last adjustment of minimum wage has been imposed three years ago.

“The regional wage boards are useless. They have been sleeping on the job for the past three years. Instead, workers want Congress to pass a law mandating a P100- across-the-board wage increase,” Magtubo said.

Magtubo claimed that the P537 minimum wage in Metro Manila was only worth P494 as of February 2022 due to inflation since 2018, according to the National Wages and Productivity Commission.

Senator Panfilo Lacson urged the government to review the minimum salary rate in various parts of the country. “We really have to start discussions now if there is a need to adjust the minimum wage, and by how much,” Lacson said.
