MELCHOR F CICHON BIOGRAPHY – The life story, a Melchor F. Cichon biography, the famous poet and some of his notable achievements.
Aklanon Librarian and poet Melchor F. Cichon was born on April 7, 1945, in Sta. Cruz, Lezo, Aklan. He is the youngest of Jose N. Cichon and Desposoria Francisco. He finished his elementary and high school in Lezo Elementary School in Lezo, Aklan, and Mindanao Regional School of Fisheries in Rio Hondo, Zamboanga City, respectively.

He was a top student. His favorite is biology and while he can fluently write in Tagalog, he finds it difficult to do the same thing with the English language. He was a student journalist in high school. For college, he went to the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, and took up a course in fisheries.
It was in this institution that he realized he was not enough knowledgeable in mathematics and English. He finds it so difficult that he was forced to drop the subject when he enrolled in it. The book English for Filipinos by Jean Edades was the one that helped him get through this difficulty.
Along with a friend, they studied the book, decided to send letters to various newspapers and magazines including the official student publication of the UP Diliman – the Philippine Collegian. Their attempts resulted in the publishing of some of their letters in the Manila Times, Sunday Times Magazine, and Weekly Graphic. One of his articles was even featured in the Philippines Free Press.

He made poems for the Philippine Collegian and little by little, his English improved.
Apart from UP, he was also studying at Manuel L. Quezon University. He finished his Master in Library Science at the Institute of Library Science, U.P. Diliman under the United Nations Development Program. In the same program, he took his Post Graduate Training Course for Southeast Asia Information Specialists.
He also has a Master in Management degree attending the UPIC College of Management and at the same time, he also received his Certificate in Governmental Management from the same institution.
Currently, he is the Head librarian and Head of the Readers Services Section of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the UP in the Visayas, Miag-ao, Iloilo. He also teaches management at the College of Management.

- Third prize of Sentro Ng Wikang Filipino, U.P., essay writing contest, 1994
- 2nd prize (Aklanon category) and 3rd prize (Filipino category) of the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts poetry contests
- 3rd prize in Hari/Hara Sang Binalaybay (King /Queen of Poetry), 1998 poetry contest
- 1st prize in a regional poetry writing contest sponsored by the Sentro Ng Wikang Filipino
- recipient of the 2001 Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas Award from the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Filipinas (UMPIL)
