ROGELIO SIKAT BIOGRAPHY – Here are some of the things you might to know about Rogelio Sikat and his achievements.

A prolific Filipino novelist, playwright, and short story writer Rogelio Sikat, who wrote numerous masterpieces that won an award. For his pen name, he uses “Sikat” but in reality, his real surname is “Sicat”. He was born in 1940 in San Isidro, Nueva Ecija, his hometown. In the 1950s, he left to pursue his degree in journalism at the University of Santo Tomas.

Sikat is the sixth of eight children of Estanislao Sikat and Crisanta Rodriguez. He was a campus writer and literary editor of The Varsitarian and one of the pioneers of fiction writing in the Philippines. He is one of the most distinguished and finest modern literary figures. Apart from that, he was also an educator.

He also taught as a professor at the University of the Philippines’ College of Arts and Letters and was a dean of the same institution. After finishing his degree in journalism, he went on exploring to further his skills. He was writing in Filipino, unlike his other contemporaries who were already adopting the writing style of the westerns during that era.

Some of his achievements include Carlos Palanca Award for his masterpiece called Impeng Negro in 1962. This story was adapted to a short film entitled “Impen, The Negro” which lasted for 30 minutes. This short film won 1st prize in the Short Feature Film Category in the 12th Gawad CCP for alternative film and video. His work Moses, Moses also won a Carlos Palanca Award.

In his career, he also joined the newspaper and magazine industry to write. He was a feature editor of Liwayway magazine.

He died in 1997 because of cancer.
