Comelec Reacts To Mayor Sara Duterte Banning Campaign Motorcades, Caravans in Davao City

COMELEC – The Commission on Elections wants the move of Mayor Sara Duterte banning campaign motorcades in Davao City reviewed.

The activities regarding the upcoming May 2022 National and Local Elections are currently among the events that are taking the attention of a lot of people. Currently, the campaign period for the national election is held thus candidates for senators, vice president, and the president are busy visiting different areas and reaching as many Filipinos as they can to campaign.

Grand rallies are usually held in every province during a visit of a presidential candidate with his or her running-mate and the members of the senate slate. It is an opportunity for the candidates to speak about their platforms and visions.

Aside from speaking in front of a huge number of people, campaign motorcades and caravans are usually held. However, in Davao City, Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio recently announced the temporary ban of motorcades and caravans amid the oil price hike.

Since January, the prices of oil products in the Philippines are going on an upward trend. Mayor Sara also stressed the inconvenient traffic jams caused by caravans and motorcades as part of the reason behind her move.

However, based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is set to review the move of Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio temporarily banning campaign motorcades in Davao City.

According to poll body spokesman James Jimenez, they have already referred the issue to the Regional Comelec Campaign Committee for review who will rule it. He cited the question whether or not the local chief executives have the power to implement an order like such.

Jimenez stressed that the Campaign Committee is still studying the move. Under the said order of Mayor Sara, all caravans and motorcades related to the upcoming election are not allowed until May 8.
