Anti-Money Laundering Council Reminds Public vs Digital Vote-Buying in E-Wallets

The Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) reminds the public against digital vote-buying using the e-wallets during the elections.

The AMLC will examine electronic money issuers such as GCash and PayMaya in addition to bank accounts with dubious activity. This is in relation to the possibility of purchasing digital votes in this election.

If a huge cash deposit is followed by frequent transfers and withdrawals, an account will be reported, according to AMLAC executive director Atty. Mel Georgie Racela at Laging Handa public briefing. According to him, AMLAC would examine an account holder’s financial background, particularly if the account’s prior activities are inconsistent.

“Iyon pong mga transaction ninyo sa inyong mga covered persons including banks and electronic money issuers such as GCash and PayMaya, recorded po iyon and anytime na magkaroon ng leads ang AMLAC, ito ay puwedeng makuha and puwedeng ma-introduce as evidence for prosecuting vote buying and vote-selling,” said Racela.

The authority issued a warning and advised them not to utilize this way to make money during the election. Those who can be demonstrated to be involved in vote buying and selling through bank transactions and electronic money issuers, according to the official, face an identical punishment of incarceration.

“Ang aking reminder sa general public: ang criminal penalty po dito ay minimum of one year and maximum of six years,” Racela added.

If an individual utilizes numerous accounts and a huge number of transactions occur in a short period of time, especially before election day, he added, it is a red signal. Meanwhile, the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) has revealed that they have received evidence that a considerable sum of money is being offered for vote-buying.
