7 Types of Electromagnetic Waves

Here are the seven types of Electromagnetic Waves

ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES – In this article, we are going to find out the seven types of EM waves.

electromagnetic waves

Electromagnetic waves are created as a result of vibrations between an electric field and a magnetic field.

Among the different types of electromagnetic waves are the following; radio waves, microwaves, infrared (IR), visible light, ultraviolet (UV), X-rays, and gamma rays.

  • Radio waves- They are commonly used for wireless transmission of sound messages or information as well as for maritime and aircraft navigation.
  • Microwaves- Used mostly for point-to-point communications systems to convey all types of information, including voice, data and video in both analog and digital formats.
  • Infrared radiation (IR) – It is a type of radiant energy that’s invisible to human eyes but can be felt (heat). The heat that we feel from sunlight, a fire, a radiator or a warm sidewalk are among the common examples of infrared.
  • Visible light- Are the only electromagnetic waves we can see. We see these waves as the colors of the rainbow.
  • Ultraviolet- It is a type of electromagnetic radiation that makes black-light posters glow, and is responsible for summer tans as well as sunburns.
  • X-rays- Are types of electromagnetic radiation probably most well-known for their ability to see through a person’s skin and reveal images of the bones beneath it.
  • Gamma-ray- It is a packet of electromagnetic energy (photon) emitted by the nucleus of some radionuclides following radioactive decay.
