38 Police Commanders in NCR Allegedly Politicking Dismissed, Relocated

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has dismissed and relocated 38 police commanders from National Capital Region (NCR) stations to avoid politicking.

The 38 police commanders in Metro Manila were sacked before being relocated, according to the PNP, to prevent them from becoming engaged in politics. Provincial directors, city directors, and police chiefs were among those removed, according to PNP commander Gen. Dionardo Carlos.

“That’s what we did even before the start of the election period to make our organization apolitical, to do away with perception of bias or familiarity,” Carlos stressed.

Those affected by the move, according to the PNP commander, include those who overstay their seats. Others, meanwhile, are picked by existing mayors or the governor standing in the national elections on May 9.

“Our police personnel should be apolitical. They will be there to level the playing field and make sure they are not bias to one candidate or another,” he explained.

According to him, the PNP leadership made this decision based on an evaluation completed through their ranks’ rotation mechanism. Meanwhile, to avoid the spread of COVID-19, Interior Secretary Eduardo Ao has directed the PNP and other local government entities to ensure that minimum health requirements be rigorously maintained during political events.

The DILG, as one of the Commission on Elections’ partner agencies, has been responsible with implementing Resolution 10732, which lays out the criteria for the conduct of political activities in 2022 in the face of the pandemic. All physical contact between candidates and the general public is prohibited, including handshakes, high fives, and kisses.

Selfies and other activities that need close closeness, such as food and drink delivery, are also forbidden.

In-person campaigns are permitted in Alert Levels 3 and 2, however candidates must be accompanied by a maximum of five campaign support employees.

Candidates are not permitted to visit any private residence and must avoid crowding. All degrees of quarantine allow motorcades. Meetings, rallies, and other conventions are permitted, according to the venue’s operating capacity and alert level.
