Music is an art and in creating music, the creator puts his emotions, feelings, and soul into it which eventually results in something that many people can relate to.

Why Are Musical Elements Important

Music identifies sadness, happiness, grief, hope, aspirations, inspiration, and many more. And what makes up music are elements. These elements are like ingredients in a recipe – each of them has contributions that make up a beautiful masterpiece.

Here are the various elements of music and the vital roles of each of these elements that makes them important:

  • Sound
    • overtone – this gives each note its unique sound
    • timbre – the tone of a musical note or in metaphors, they are called the “nasally,” “resonant,” “vibrant,” “strident,” “high,” “low,” “breathy,” “piercing,” “ringing,” “rounded,” “warm,” “mellow,” “dark,” “bright,” “heavy,” “light,” “vibrato.”
    • pitch – how high or low a note sounds
    • amplitude – how loud or soft a sound is
    • duration – how long or short the sound is
  • Melody – this is a series of pitches that make a tune.
  • Harmony – this is the sound that was created when two or more pitches are performed at the same time to form a chord
  • Rhythm – this is the pattern or organization of music in time
  • Texture – this is the thickness or thinness of layers of sounds, melodies, and rhythms in a piece

      • Monophony: a single layer of sound or the solo voice
      • Homophony: the one with accompanoment or singing with a band or any musical instruments
      • Polyphony: two or more voices
  • Structure/form – the sections or movement of a piece
  • Expression
    • dynamics or the volume

    • articulation or the manner how notes are played or words pronounced
